Make fire

Make fire

Being able to make fire is one of man's most significant discoveries and a prerequisite for the life we live today. The foundation of our civilization rests on our ability to make fire and control that fire. This magical and frightening element gives us endless possibilities all at the same time. There is something about an open fire that will always link us to the reality of our ancestors. When we go into nature and forget about our busy schedules, we feel connected to those who have gone before us. When basic needs such as hunger and fatigue strike, when we freeze or need a moment of peace, the fire is there for us just as it has been for man since time began. How to make a fire? Scientists believe that the first fire ignited by man was nearly 800,000 years ago. The fire had only been a threat of impending danger and natural disasters until then. The first methods of making fire were based entirely on friction. Many of us, as children, tried to act like our ancestors and strike two stones against each other. We sometimes produced a burnt scent; maybe someone even got a lucky spark. Giving yourself the best possible circumstances means everything if you are to succeed in making a fire from scratch. What you will need: A spark. Use matches, a lighter, or FireSteel. Ignition material. Dry pieces of twigs, paper, and cardboard are classic fire starters. Even better, natural resinous firewood like Tindersticks. Wood. Reasonably dry. Knife. Start feeding the fire with fuel when you have a flame on your ignition material. Begin with small sticks, carve if needed, and gradually add larger pieces as the fire grows. Water. We may have mastered fire, but it must be treated with respect. Always have water ready and make sure the fire is completely extinguished before you leave. Make a fire with FireSteel Today, some luxuries have made us forget the basic principle behind fire — friction. These days we light a match or press a lighter, and there it is: fire. However, these tools have limitations, as you may have noticed if you’ve tried to use wet matches or light a flame in windy conditions. In situations like this, a fantastic alternative is a FireSteel. Making a fire with FireSteel is both easy and safe — and also fun. It’s a small investment that can create thousands of sparks. It leaves no debris behind and works in all weather conditions. FireSteel consists of a magnesium rod and a metal striker that creates sparks when scraped together. These sparks are extremely hot — significantly hotter and more durable than those from a lighter or match. Tip! A FireKnife combines a knife and FireSteel in one — a perfect combo for outdoor adventures.

How to Start a Fire with Light My Fire MayaSticks

How to Start a Fire with Light My Fire MayaSticks

Fire is a source of pure energy. It warms our bodies, cooks nourishing food, connects us with others and kindles our sense of belonging to nature. This primal source of energy is exactly what motivated us to bring MayaSticks to life. Why MayaSticks? MayaSticks are the embodiment of our brand ethos, a nod to simpler times when solutions were designed in harmony with nature. Launched in 1995, these sticks were the spark that ignited our brand. But what makes MayaSticks truly special? The secret lies in their composition. Made from high-quality fatwood, a material naturally abundant in aromatic, waterproof resin, MayaSticks offer a series of advantages when it comes to lighting and sustaining a fire. Fatwood is the natural byproduct of resin-soaked wood. The resin comes from the roots after the tree is harvested, serving as the tree's natural protection. If you're fortunate, you might come across a pine that has been struck by lightning. When this happens, the entire tree will be saturated with resin, extending all the way to the point where the tree was struck. This particular fatwood comes from the stumps of a distinctive pine species in Honduras, known as Montezum and Caribea. This tree is impressive, growing almost three times larger than the Swedish pine in just 15-20 years and boasting up to 80% natural resin content, compared to the 30% in Swedish pine. This natural, resin-rich wood outperforms commercial fire starters. A one-by-one-inch petroleum-based paraffin wax cube, for example, burns for up to eight minutes. MayaSticks can burn for up to 20 minutes and produce a significantly hotter flame. The burn time can vary slightly depending on the thickness of the sticks. These attributes make fatwood-based fire starters like MayaSticks a superior choice for prolonged and robust flames. How MayaSticks Improve Fire Starting It's this high resin content in fatwood that makes MayaSticks so invaluable. Resin, rich in hydrocarbon, is highly flammable. When ignited, the resin in the fatwood acts as natural fuel, bolstered by its natural chemical compounds like terpenes. These compounds vaporize upon heating, creating a combustible gas when mixed with oxygen, that helps a fire burn for longer. The benefits of the elevated resin percentage in MayaSticks allow you to: Ignite quickly: The lower ignition point of resin compared to plain wood allows MayaSticks to catch fire more quickly than plain wood. Burn longer: The resin, acting as a slow-burning fuel, allows the wood to burn for a more extended period, offering up to 20 minutes of flame compared to the shorter burn of conventional fire starters. Increase heat: With resin burning hotter than mere wood fiber, MayaSticks provide an efficient heat source. Repel water: Being hydrophobic, the resin repels water, making MayaSticks an essential fire-starter, even in damp environments. Experience better aroma: When MayaSticks are burning, the resin gives off a comforting, piney smell that adds to the fire's ambiance. Reduce kindling: Owing to its flammable nature, fewer MayaSticks are required to start a fire compared to other types of kindling. -------- Starting a Fire with MayaSticks is Easy Learn how to start a fire with MayaSticks for your BBQ, camping or fireplace with this easy step-by-step guide: Step 1: Prepare Your Fire Area If you’re outside, make sure to clear debris from the area to prevent unwanted spread. Indoors, your fireplace already provides a safe, contained space. Step 2: Shave or Light Your MayaStick Firmly hold your MayaStick in one hand, using a sharp knife in the other to shave off thin, small pieces. If you’re using the Swedish FireKnife, you can also use the backside of the knife to create even smaller fire starter kindling. For an even easier start, you can light one entire MayaStick or multiple MayaSticks at a time. Step 3: Place Your Shavings or Stick Once you have your shavings, place them and one or two MayaSticks underneath your firewood. If your wood is larger or damp, you may need additional sticks to guarantee your fire starts. Step 4: Light Your Fire Use your FireKnife or FireSteel to make long and slow strikes at a 45-degree angle directly toward your shavings. The friction of the striker or knife against the FireSteel will create sparks to ignite the shavings or sticks. You can also use matches or a lighter. Step 5: Build Your Fire As your MayaSticks burn, they will ignite the surrounding firewood. Continue to add more firewood as needed, and enjoy the warmth and aroma of a natural burn! MayaSticks are not only easy to light, but also burn with a robust, hot flame. They’re the perfect companion for anyone who appreciates the primal satisfaction of creating fire. -------- MayaSticks come in bundles with burnable paper, wooden crates or large boxes. They are essential for creating dependable flames. Whether you’re an outdoor cooking enthusiast, a camping aficionado or someone who enjoys the warmth of a fire at home, MayaSticks are your reliable fire-starting solution, anytime, anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Camping Fire Starters Where do you source your MayaSticks? We source our wood from a reputable company in Honduras. They reuse the leftover stumps which would otherwise go to waste. They also plant two new trees for every stump they remove. This creates jobs and helps the local community. How do you ensure ethical sourcing of the wood? MayaSticks have received certification under the SCS Material Content Certification Program for using 100% reclaimed material. This standard was developed by SCS to reduce pressures on natural forests and other sensitive environments while striving to meet ever-increasing human demands for wood and other plant-based products. Why do you source the wood in Honduras instead of Sweden? The Swedish pine (Pino Sylvestor) grows to a full-size tree in 80-100 years. In Honduras, the pine species (Montezum and Caribea) mature in 15-20 years and grow to nearly three times the size of Swedish pine. Also, our MayaSticks have much more resin: up to 80% compared to 30-40% in Swedish pine.

Swedish KOKKAFFE – sustainable camp coffee for life under the bare sky

Swedish KOKKAFFE – sustainable camp coffee for life under the bare sky

Swedish KOKKAFFE – sustainable camp coffee for life under the bare sky Brewing coffee outdoors is more than a habit - it’s a tradition. With Swedish KOKKAFFE, Light My Fire brings Nordic camp coffee culture into the present, offering a sustainable, ethical, and small-scale produced coffee from Honduras, created for slow brewing over open fire and quiet moments in nature. Swedish KOKKAFFE stands apart from many other options on the market. It is a medium-roasted, nuanced, and well-balanced camp coffee, developed to highlight the coffee’s natural flavors - unlike traditionally dark-roasted camp coffees, which are often heavier and more bitter. Swedish KOKKAFFE is crafted with a focus on responsible sourcing, craftsmanship and low environmental impact. What is camp coffee (kokkaffe)? Camp coffee is a classic Nordic brewing method where coarsely ground coffee gently simmers in water. The method requires no filters or single-use products and is perfectly suited for outdoor life, camping and cooking over an open fire. The result is a full-bodied yet smooth coffee and a brewing ritual that encourages slowing down and savoring the moment. Ethical and organic coffee from Honduras Swedish KOKKAFFE comes from COMICOVEL Organic, a cooperative of small-scale coffee farmers in Honduras. The farms are located in the Opalaca Mountains, where producers work organically with a strong focus on biodiversity, forest conservation, and sustainable water management. The cooperative is part of the Blue Harvest Project, an initiative that has helped more than 1,400 producers in Central America develop their farms into sustainable ecosystems. All coffee is organically produced, enabling farmers to continue investing in both their land and their future. A coffee that reflects Light My Fire’s values “Swedish KOKKAFFE is more than coffee — it’s an expression of our love for nature and our responsibility for how products are made,”says Calill Odqvist Jagusch, CEO of Light My Fire. For Light My Fire, sustainability is about the entire chain — from raw material to experience. Swedish KOKKAFFE is a natural step in exploring how food and drink can enhance outdoor life, without compromising people, nature, or the environment. A gentle medium roast with clear terroir (Terroir = the taste of place) The coffee is roasted in Sweden by Solde Kafferosteri in small batches. The roast is gentle and carefully calibrated to preserve the coffee’s origin, character, and natural flavor nuances. Flavor profile:• Orange• Milk chocolate• Subtle forest notes The coarse grind makes Swedish KOKKAFFE ideal for camp coffee and brewing over an open fire. A sustainable coffee for outdoor life Swedish KOKKAFFE is:• Organically certified• Ethically produced• Designed for camp coffee brewing• Perfect for camping, hiking, and outdoor cooking It’s coffee for those who want to enjoy both the flavor — and the moment. How to brew Swedish KOKKAFFEServes 6 cups: 4 cups (1 liter) water, 2 1/2 oz (70 g) ground coffee How to do it: Heat water in a coffee pot over the fire or on a stove. Aim for about 80°C (176°F). You’ll see small bubbles (“fish eyes”) and thin clouds of steam. Remove the pot from the heat, add the ground coffee and stir to make sure all of the coffee is wet. Put the lid on and let the coffee steep for 4–5 minutes. Stir gently a few times and replace the lid. Wait another minute for the grounds to settle. Pour coffee carefully into cups, avoiding the grounds - a little sediment is fine. As the coffee cools, more flavors emerge - take your time and enjoy every sip. Swedish KOKKAFFE – more than coffee Drinking coffee around the fire is a way to gather, share stories, and feel a sense of belonging. Swedish KOKKAFFE reminds us that the simplest things are often the best: water, coffee, fire and time together. Swedish KOKKAFFE also marks the beginning of a new chapter for Light My Fire. Cooking under the bare sky remains at the heart of everything we do, now given new life through experiences and cooking activities where our products are truly used and come into their own. For us, the future is about more than products. At CAMP Light My Fire in Malmö, we will host events that connect food, fire, sustainability and community. Moments for sharing skills, slowing down and exploring how we can live and eat more sustainably outdoors, together.
